A getaway with extra layers of coziness

Getaway hut in the Eastern Catskills

As I’m writing this, a new year has begun and we are inching closer to a back-to-normal routine, even though we are still not quite there yet. Traveling continues to be disrupted, but some entrepreneurs have found ways to make traveling close by rather appealing, and safe. May I introduce the little getaway cabins of Getaway.house.com!

To be fair, these little wooden cabins have been popping up all over the country, under different companies, but as a New Yorker, this one, located in the Eastern Catskills, a picturesque mountainous area a bit over two hours driving from the city, was in closest proximity to me, and I decided to spend a few leisurely days here with my husband, leaving our little toddler in good care with her amazing grandmas.

Kitchenette with all your basic needs

These huts are so cute and cozy! You can choose between a rustic cabin with no plumbing or a “luxurious” one, which comes with your own bathroom (and the much-needed proper plumbing!). We chose the latter and were happy with the set-up: A little kitchenette with a mini-fridge and basic cooking appliances. That mac and cheese out of the box never tasted better! The comfortable bed was right by the window, overlooking the woods, which came with a lovely morning sight of a deer or two! It’s the perfect space for an individual or couple who wants serenity away from home. A smores-kit is provided, in addition to some games for your entertainment. Pricing starts below $200 per night, which makes this an affordable getaway, unlike many others that pride themselves in having the best views. Their views are pure nature and worth every penny!

In the heart of Woodstock

If you decide to leave this haven of tranquility, the action and sights aren’t too far either. You can reach Woodstock, famous for its 1969 bacchanal of a music festival, in less than half an hour, and visit other quaint towns, such as Saugerties and Annandale-on-Hudson. Saugerties has an intriguing antique shop called Saugerties Antique Center where you might find an old watch or comic book to your liking, and there’s also the fabulous Inquiring Mind Bookstore & Cafe, all on the same street. This bookstore was entirely deserted on a Tuesday morning and you can sit with your drink in hand and read a book while there, for hours on end. Annandale-on-Hudson features the prominent Bard College, a private liberal arts institution with a theater hall created by Frank Gehry. We strolled through that campus wishing to be students once again! Everything about this college is appealing, from its outstanding music, dance, and architecture program, in addition to being aesthetically flawless.

In the end, we did a hybrid-version by staying in for one wholeday while it rained and exploring nearby towns the following day. The cabin is self-check-in and entirely remote, meaning you will not interact with a single person, unless you need or want to. Are you ready to book your getaway for 2022? Valentine’s Day is right around the corner! And what better time to snug up in a mini-cabin than winter and an idyllic snow season ahead?
